valentine's day books for kids

Our Valentine's Day book wall focuses on the themes of friendship, kindness, and love. Our book wall always includes a mix of those we own and many from the library. I always try to put holiday themed books on hold a few weeks in advance so that we can read them in the days leading up to the holiday and also to ensure we don't end up somewhere deep in the waitlist for a popular title. While love day is right around the corner, it's not too late to snag some of these before (or even after Valentine's Day). At our house, we will be celebrating love all month long.

Here are some of the books on our bookshelf this year:

1. Love, Z by Jessie Sima - Z the Robot find a mysterious message in a bottle and the only words decipherable are Love, Beatrice. Z sets out on a quest to find this Beatrice and the meaning of love.

2. Tiny T. Rex and The Impossible Hug by Jonathan Stutzman - Tiny the T. Rex wants to cheer up his friend Pointy with a hug, but with his tiny arms, the task feels impossible. However, Tiny will do whatever it takes to solve this problem and be a good friend.

3. You're Always Enough: And More Than I Hoped For by Emily Ley - A sweet story that teaches children that they are loved just the way they are.

4. Valentine's Day in the Village by Phyllis Alsdurf - A young girl hatches a plan to create a community-wide Valentine's Day celebration and in a show of beautiful kindness, the entire community pitches in to make the event truly special.

5. You Will Be My Friend! by Peter Brown - Lucy the bear is desperate to make a new friend, but she accidentally causes havoc at every turn. Eventually, an unlikely friend accepts her just the way she is.

6. Where Happiness Lives by Barry Timms - A sweet story about three mice that each wish for grander homes until they realize that they have everything they need and come to appreciate what they have.

7. I'm (Almost) Always Kind by Anna Milbourne - A young girl learns to empathize with others and understands that kindness does not always look the same to everyone.

8. Lola Dutch I Love You So Much by Kenneth Wright - Lola's friends are in grouchy moods, so Lola sets out to show each of them how much she loves them through acts of service and kindness.

9. In My Heart by Jo Witek - This story explores and identifies all sorts of feelings from joy to anger to sadness to bravery.

10. Love Is by Diane Adams - This sweet story follows a young girl that finds and raises a duckling, eventually learning that love means letting go and that true love endures.

11. A Crankenstein Valentine by Samantha Berger - This is the story of a grumpy monster that hates all aspects of love and Valentine's Day until he meets a friend that feels the same way.

12. Love, Ruby Valentine by Laurie B. Friedman - A super cute story about a girl who loves Valentine's Day and works so hard making cards and sweets that she ends up sleeping through the big day.

13. Love Monster and the Last Chocolate by Rachel Bright - Love Monster comes home from his vacation to find a box of chocolates waiting for him. He struggles to decide whether he should keep them for himself or share them with his friends. His decision ends with a sweet surprise.

14. The Love Letter by Anika Aldamuy Denise - Friends Hedgehog, Bunny, and Squirrel each find a love letter believing it was given to them by someone else and is then inspired to show kindness, setting off a sweet chain reaction.

15. Strictly No Elephants by Lisa Mantchev - A boy and his pet elephant head to a pet club meeting where they find out that elephants are not invited. The pair decide to start their own pet club in which everyone is included.

And there you have it! Hopefully this list has given you some ideas of some sweet books you can read snuggled up with your kiddos this month.
