summer reading challenge

Summer is quickly approaching, and I could not be more excited. There is something so magical about summertime with children - endless days of running barefoot through the sprinkler, popsicles on the patio, beach days, catching fireflies as the sun finally begins to set. Pure magic.

In the midst of all this, sometimes books and reading can fall to the wayside. Not only is it important for children to continue reading during the summer months to prevent significantly losing skills and knowledge gained during the school year, but personally, I also can't think of a more magical time for reading. Which is why I've created this simple summer reading challenge for you to use with your kids.

This reading log can really be used in any way that works for your family. There is both a larger log that can be hung on the refrigerator or in your child's room, as well as reading log "bookmarks" that can be used week by week. Have your children complete the logs individually or work together on it as a family. Use the popsicles to signify the number of minutes read (for example, cross off a popsicle for every 20 minutes read), the number of books read, or simply cross off a popsicle each day you spend any amount of time reading.

I hope this log serves as a helpful reminder to you and your children to keep books a part of your daily summer rhythms and routines.
